WHIMM is a post-punk trio fronted by Mounir Chami, whose Palestinian heritage plays a great role in the themes behind the lyrics of the group’s dark, sharp and often atonal songs. Chami’s strong vocal presence as a frontman establishes the band’s sombre yet energetic sonic landscape. Their debut album ‘A Stare Ajar’ (2017) was mixed by Dean Tzenos of Odonis Odonis, which may have had a role to play in their being called one of the most intense bands in Toronto. WHIMM’s latest release, the EP ‘Not My Kind’ came out on May 11 this year.
One of Amsterdam’s most recent garage sensations, HAND clearly pushes the limits of the genre to its loudest state. That being said, they are amongst the few bands in the genre that do not let the loudness take anything away from the quality of the songwriting itself. They put out a self-titled album in the summer of 2017 which may very well be the most underrated release of the year in the Netherlands.
